Trip Profile:

Trip Overview

Wrangell, Sumner Strait, Chatham Strait, Chatham Strait, Tebenkof Bay, Fredrick Sound, Petersburg

This adventure begins in the small community of Wrangell Alaska where we board the Snow Goose for our epic journey. With our Tebenkof Bay Wilderness sites, we begin orienting ourselves with the vessel, crew, and sleeping quarters. Leaving this small port immediately puts us in SE Alaska Wilderness. With glaciers in the backdrop, we head west toward Chatham Strait through Sumner Strait, keeping our eyes peeled for migrating and feeding humpback whales. Once we round the corner and head north up Chatham Strait it is apparent why these whales have been congregating here to feed.

With Baranof Island to our west and Alexander Archipelago to our east, we transit with excitement about what we are embarking upon. Upon entering the bay we will search for a calm anchorage followed by a kayak orientation and initial paddle. With our cameras at the ready, we hope to immediately observe these magical animals. Our skiff and mother ship will always be at the ready along with our hydrophone and cameras to hopefully capture unique feeding behaviors.

Following our stay in Tebenkof we continue north into Fredrick Sound, past the native village of Kake. Speckled with bays and islets we hope to find more whales and other wildlife from our floating home.

The journey will terminate in the small fishing town of Petersburg. A great place to spend a day with a welcoming community we will say our goodbyes and hopefully meet again someday.

Embark on an Extraordinary Expedition: A Haven for Whale Enthusiasts and Bold Adventurers!

This voyage is for whale enthusiasts. For the last 5 years, Humpback whales have been congregating in Tebinkof Bay Wilderness following their migration paths from Hawaii and Mexico.  Reported in the hundreds, this 66,000-acre wilderness is new to the Snow Goose and takes a spirited individual who wants to visit a place most charter companies don’t venture to.  Accessing this area requires exposure to the Gulf of Alaska which can produce some swell.  However, the Bay gives shelter for our remaining days.
