Trip Overview

Glacier Bay National Park, Cross Sound, Icy Straits, Chatham Sound, Peril Straits, Sitka

Our extraordinary journey commences in Glacier Bay, a geologically young area nestled under the shadow of Mt. Edgecombe on Baranof Island's outer coast. From this stunning location, we set out on an adventure that will take us through breathtaking landscapes and encounters with abundant marine life, culminating in Sitka's charming fishing port town.

Embarking from Sitka Harbor, we enter Sitka Sound in search of majestic Humpback whales, playful Sea otters, delightful Puffins, Auklets, and other intriguing marine species. As we navigate the winding Peril Strait, we closely watch the shoreline to spot terrestrial creatures frequenting the area.

A major highlight awaits us at the Peril Straits and Chatham Strait confluence, where we focus on observing whales. After an eventful day of hiking and whale watching, we head northward towards Icy Strait, where the collision of two major bodies of water sustains a bountiful food supply for these magnificent creatures. Along the shorelines, we'll witness changing flora as we approach the Fairweather range en route to Cross Sound and the Gulf of Alaska.

Our eager exploration takes us into Glacier Bay National Park, a mesmerizing region that has recently emerged from the ice. The journey up Glacier Bay feels like a captivating trip back in time, with old-growth forests giving way to bare rock as we venture deeper into the bay's upper reaches. Tidewater glaciers rumble and roar as they slowly retreat, releasing massive icebergs into the sea. Towering granite cliffs awe us as we navigate through ice floes toward the faces of these colossal glaciers.

Throughout the journey, our expert naturalist and guide enlighten us on plant succession, glaciation, local geology, and the interconnectedness of the wildlife in this area, showcasing the astounding biodiversity of this pristine wilderness. We find secluded anchorages each evening, providing time to reflect and indulge in delectable meals prepared by our skilled Chef. Serene evenings often offer opportunities for a leisurely exploration of the shores by kayak or skiff, revealing hidden gems. As our flexible schedule allows for adaptation to the region's variables, our remarkable expedition draws to a close in Sitka, leaving us with cherished memories of this unforgettable adventure through Glacier Bay and Alaska's captivating wilderness.
