Sitka Sound, Peril Straits, Chatham Strait, Barnof Island, Fredrick Sound, Hokum Bay……

This excursion is adjustable for an 8-10 day + excursion. While we begin in Sitka, our route can be adjusted to your desire and the ending port can be Petersburg, Wrangell, or Ketchikan. Maybe you want to explore the outer coast? Maybe spend more time on anchor to kayak or spend a couple days at the hot springs? Do you want to spend some time fishing? I know the area and can discuss options. The below itinerary is for an 8 day trip starting in Sitka and ending in Petersburg to give you some idea.

Nestled in the shadow of Mt. Edgecombe, on the outer coast of Baranof Island, our trip will begin in the Russian Capital turned fishing-port town of Sitka. From the Sitka Harbor, we will enter into Sitka Sound in search of Humpback whales, Sea otters, Puffins, Auklets, and other pelagic marine species. From Sitka Sound, we will navigate our way through winding Peril Strait, where we will search the shores of the narrow passageway for the terrestrial creatures that frequent this shoreline. Once on the inside of Baranof Island, we will continue south along the waterfall coast to the small community of Baranof to hike the trails and soak in a beautiful natural hot spring.

From Baranof Island, we will head east into Fredrick Sound – the summer feeding grounds for marine mammals such as Humpback Whales, Porpoise, Sea Lions. Fredrick Sound is home to Admiralty Island; which boasts the densest Brown Bear and Nesting Bald Eagle population on earth. By foot, kayak, and from the decks of the Snow Goose, we will explore the shores of Tongass National Forest, the largest temperate rain forest in North America. Every step of the way, our knowledgeable naturalist will be with you to answer questions and offer hands-on learning experiences.

Evenings will bring us to secluded anchorages where we will have time to relax and reflect on the day’s activities. Most nights, we will have kayaks in the water – available to any who wish to explore in solitude the beautiful shoreline of Alaska. Our final days, depending on the tide, we enable us to hike one last time to the face of a grounded glacier – a glacier which has receded from the coastline up into a rocky valley. Our trip ends in the colorful town of Petersburg – known as the “Little Norway” of Alaska, where you will be able to explore yet another friendly Alaskan metropolis.
