Trip Profile:

Trip Overview

Lynn Canal, Icy Strait, Glacier Bay, Chatham Strait, Peril Straits, Sitka Sound.

This trip begins in the capital of Alaska, Juneau.  Immediately we enter Lynn canal and then migrate west.  We As we enter Icy strait we will continue to pass through whale rich waters as these two major bodies of water collide providing abundant food for these enormous mammals.  Scanning the shore lines for bears one will begin to notice the changing shoreline fauna.  With the Fairweather range looming in the background our passage takes us west toward Cross sound and the Gulf of Alaska.

Anxious to explore further, we make the journey into Glacier Bay National Park.  Since Glacier Bay has just recently emerged from the ice, it is considered a geologically young area. A trip up Glacier Bay is like a trip back in time. Old growth forests give way to bare rock as we make our way back into the upper reaches of the bay. Here, the tidewater glaciers still rumble and roar as they make their slow retreat back, dropping huge icebergs into the sea. Magnificent granite cliffs tower above our small ship as we wind our way up the fjord through the ice floes towards the faces of these massive glaciers. Along the way, our expert naturalist and guide will point out the finer points of plant succession, glaciation, local geology, and the interconnectedness of the animals that call this area home. The biodiversity of this place is simply amazing.

Upon departing Glacier Bay National Park and preserve, we will make our way south through Chatham Straits.  Winding our way south toward Sitka we travel through small passages and narrow channels with a sense of wonder and place as we have explored and touched a small piece of what Alaska has to offer.

The trip ends in the quaint town of Sika where guests may choose to explore the local sights or continue home with a new sense of stewardship, knowledge, and appreciation for what they experienced.
